A Huhnseal solution for a demanding bituminous sand management application, where standard sealing was no longer enough.
In highly demanding industrial applications, reliability is never the result of a single component. It is the outcome of a system designed to withstand severe operating conditions over time.
This was the case in a challenging bituminous sand management application, where the pumping system had to operate in a discharge pond filled with bituminous sands, dense oils, rubber fragments and large abrasive debris.
In such an environment, conventional pumping and sealing solutions were no longer enough.
The client had already introduced several advanced process upgrades to improve solids handling, efficiency and operational continuity. These included a semi-open impeller designed to pass large solids, a reinforced filtration system and an integrated agitator to continuously dislodge residual material.
However, these improvements also created a new requirement: the mechanical seal had to match the same level of performance, endurance and reliability.
Huhnseal engineered a custom double-acting mechanical seal, fully integrated with the client’s system and specifically designed for highly abrasive slurry conditions.
The result was a sealing solution capable of supporting several thousand continuous operating hours, reducing maintenance interventions and contributing to longer component life.
This project confirms a key principle of Huhnseal engineering: in critical applications, a mechanical seal is not simply selected. It is engineered around the process.
